December Meeting Recap

Boop.  Under construction for now.

An administrative header:

  1. We are indeed horrible at updating the site.  I pledge to fix this, but I’ve said that before.
  2. Meetings will always happen.  First Friday of the month.  Click that calendar in your taskbar.  Is it the first Friday of the month? Yes? Then we have a meeting at 7 and you should be there, even if you get there late, don’t worry.  Today is not the first Friday? Then get hyped for the next meeting. Also: https://www.meetup.com/dc414group/
  3. I was locked out of my account and had problems resetting it.  The root problem was found to be related to salty meat that comes in a can.  In other words: SPAM.  As you can tell, I’m back in now.
  4. Meetings do have rules, DC414 has rules.  I’m not bothered to define them right now, but I want to establish that we’re not crazy anarchistic and if something bugs you about a meeting, let us know.  We really only say something if it gets to be a problem.  In summary, our rules derive from DEFCON, and are mostly “Don’t be a dick”
  5. The Meeting Recaps are what I’ve seen, or what the other writers have seen.  There is almost always some other cool thing that I didn’t see or write down.  If I missed a cool thing that happened, just give me a writeup on it and I’ll get it out there.
  6. We are really growing.  Seriously, about 20 or more per meeting, lots of fun things.  And we’re glad you showed up even if we didn’t get a chance to tell you that directly.

Okay, so on to a summary of cool things we did this past meeting.  I’ll update with video and images when I can.

Under construction.

Lots of chatter

This meeting was a lot more social.  Less demos, and more talking with each other.  Seems to just be the December motif, and that’s fine if it is more social than demos. Lots of beer swapping, candy, and candy corn beer.

Nothing that a good probing can’t fix

There was discussion over tracking down a possible break in an ethernet cable at someone’s place of business.  Another hacker was kind enough to bring in an amplifier probe, and demo’d how that would track down a break.

Safe Dial

Messed around with a safe dial that was mounted on an orange acrylic stand.  We didn’t know the combination, but we figured it out. And then set a new one.

And in a first for DC414, I will include the details of that combination:

We chose to do the square of 414.  414 x 414.  Which is 171396.  So the combination is 17-13-96.  Congrats, you know the combination to a lock on an acrylic stand, that secures nothing.  It is a really janky combination, and talk to one of us and we’ll go over why.

This lock will also probably be tuned and updated.  We’ll practice safe dial manipulation later.

But can you pick it with a fork?

This will be the writeup on the lock that we picked with a plastic fork.  Pictures and video support this, and will be put here in a fun writeup.

So, again, under construction, but I’m getting something out there as soon as I can.

December Meeting Recap

darkwind tried to show off a pager hacking demo.  I believe we were getting some new and unknown interference on the RF band he was trying to hack.  Not going to call this one as a demo fail, since the new RF interference is interesting.

DAS BOOT.  We lockpicked a TRIMAX car boot, using a BIC pen.  I think time from the package being opened to it being picked was less than 30 min.  Once we got a process going, we could pick it in under 17 seconds, just a BIC pen.  Video exists of this, we’ll try to get it put up soon.  TRIMAX: your product sucks, BIC: your products rule.

Watch a video of the TRIMAX fail

<REDACTED2> showcased a hack to Southwest’s boarding zone/boarding number system.  Want to be in line as A17 and not B47? <REDACTED2> showed us how.

We also discussed a new DC414 DEFCON Groups point-of-contact.  That has now been set and communicated to the DEFCON person responsible.  We’ll once again be recognized as an active group!

Titles are updated.  If you look under the contact portion of our page, most of the goofy titles will be updated there.

You’ll note I left some names out as <REDACTED>.  If you want your name/nickname there, let me know.  I don’t want our recaps to be a blast of “CRASH OVERLOAD HAXXORD THE GIBSON” to the Internet and anyone who may see it and cause trouble for the person who did the hack. (Some names have since been approved to be un-redacted)

That’s all the demos I can recall.

Next meeting: Jan 8th, 2016.

February meeting awesomeness and sadness

February was another great meeting. It started with me and ngharo running late then doing the introductions, which there was a lot of. Its always good to see new faces at meetings. Then I broke the sad news that I will be leaving Wisconsin and so dc414 as well, appointed ngharo as new prez and stepped down. Then ngharo said a few words and gave us a glimpse of some of the changes he will be making. Everyone be sure to congratulate ngharo, I can’t wait to see what he does with the place.

Rob started the demos off with hacking a used disposable flash camera and a halogen light bulb to make a handy improvised flash light. I perfect zombie apocalypse type hack. Then he busted out materials for everyone to make their own zombie caution light. It did’t take long for people to start hacking it up even more and did all kinds of crazy things. Vlad was the first to turn things up to 10 by doing something to the transformer in the camera to pump out more voltage and get a brighter light. Then dw5304 and others did their best to blow the capacitors and other things up! Then using the flash bulb that came with the camera and capacitors over 9000 we tried to do some UV tattooing. Next up was Klaiviel doing a key impressioning demo for the newbies in the crowd. Here are some photos of the meeting.

So here it is, my last post on dc414. It has been a fun ride and I will miss everyone. You can still find me on the dc414 irc chan and I will be at meetings via G+ or what ever ngharo sets up for the group. See you out there.

November meeting recap.

First, many thanks to The Meetupery for hosting our meeting. You guys rock! Klaiviel got things going with his thingy that he plans on trying to make more of “I hope to get one!”. Then we went around the room and found out what everyone is up to. I made a few announcements that will be repeated here on a later date and Ngharo talked about his big plans for the new and improved dc414 PBX! I can’t wait for that to get done 🙂 Then dc5304 attempted to show us a super sweet SDR but ended up showing us how to brick one 😛 Then we talked about a old ass UHF/VHF scanner that you programmed with crystals I found at a yard sale. The one I got had 8 ports but only 5 crystals 4 of which had been identified with the fifth one unknown. We attempted to find the frequency of it but did not have all the right equipment. Anyway I thought it was a cool little piece of radio history so we gave it away along with a few other things. Here are a few pictures from the meeting. Congrats to the big winner college boy!

March meeting madness!

The March meeting was no let down, we had lots of people and as always great demos. Ngharo got it started with a make your own pringles can cantenna. 9 luck attendees got to make and take home their own cantenna!  Then he kept it going with a quick demo of radio Mobile and how to use it to make a long range wireless mesh network. Then the professor gave a demo on metasploit using a java exploit to root a windows box. dw5304 took over and gave a little demo of a hacked xbox360 and using a laptop to control everything the console does. Here are some pictures from the meeting. Congrats to uberushaximus for winning 100 free hours to AOL high speed!!

dc414 @ barcampmke7

Last years barcampmke was awesome, everyone had lots of fun and met some great people. Some of you might remember we had a little stand last year and ran the good old wall of sheep, well we liked it so much that this year we decided to become an official sponsor of barcampmke and expand our operations. This year we will not only be doing the the wall of sheep, but we will also be running a lockpick and tamper evident village, cat5 cable making couples contest, plus giving away free beer!! To get a free beer you have to either pick a lock from the village in under 2 minutes or reveal the secret message contained in a package secured with tamper evident lables, tape, lock seals, and tug tights, or beat your competitor to making a working cat5 cable! So sharpen up on your skills and win some free beer! See you at barcamp.

August meeting awesomeness

Klaiviel started us off by giving us a nice show of binary key card hotel locks popular over seas, showed us a 3d printed key for one of his locks, explained pick proof locks from the 40s that are no longer used but highly effective and how to make them today using regular locks. Then he showed us why he is the second best key impressionist in the world, and made a working key for a lock right in front of us and giving us step by step instructions on how to do it our selves.

I stepped in and gave a quick demo of how I made our new and improved donations bucket which I will be making a blog post on later. Darkwind came packing with a alfa wifi antenna hooked up to a satellite dish! This made a killer directional wifi antenna, we took it up to the roof of bucketworks and got signals from all over including the moon 😛 Ngharo hooked it up to his lappy and cracked a few networks 🙂

After the roof party was over and we got back down stairs Castor gave a DEFCON20 badge hacking demo and showed us how to turn our badges into any other badge type we wanted, then showed us how to make the LEDs on the badge flash out words and stuffs. Then we all just started bull shitting and talking about up coming projects.

Cmoney couldnt make it out so I took a few picture that you can view here. Congrats to darkwind and faraday for winning the dc414 free junk giveaway!!

May meeting recap.

May’s meeting was off the hook, one of our best yet! Lots of new faces which is always nice, good demos, and good beer. Ngharo started it off by talking about the hackathon and THOTCON. Klaiviel did his lock master thing and said a few words about TOOOL. Darkwind gave a awesome demo on sniffing pagers. Its crazy to see all the pager traffic that is still out there. Then I showed off my Arduino windows attack tool and pwned a windows 7 box, There will a blog post about that later. Congrats to Genero for winning the dc414 free junk giveaway! I did take a bunch of pictures but my phone was full of fail and didn’t save any of them 🙁 so no pictures of the meeting this time, sorry. I promise to do better next time 😛 later.

THOTCON greatness

This was the best THOTCON I have been to yet! Awesome talks, awesome beer, awesome food, and awesome people kinda sums it up for this year. Mine and ngharo’s talk went really well, and so far I have had lots of good feed back. I was a little drunk by the time we did our talk so that helped a lot, lol. My favorite talk was “Owning Payphones: 3650-Day Exploits” from savant, dude did a wonderful job and violated payphones in dirty ways! The one I learned the most from was “You put what in your DNS record?” from Mubix, yeah zone transfers are old school and I been using it for ever, but I had no idea you could do it to com and stuff, lol. Here are some pics of the swag and the con. Enjoy.

Me and ngharo giving our talk:

April fun

Aprils meeting wasn’t for fools, it was for hackers 😛 It was another awesome meeting full of beer, pizza, lulz, and hacks. dw5304 got the night rolling with how to bypass windows 7 login password, then went on to talk bout how to pwn Time Warner internet! Then Klaiviel gave us a 101 style schooling on hand cuffs, tumbler, combo, and tubular locks and some others! He also covered some car locks, key impression and stuff. He explained the different picking methods and the tools of the trade. Ngharo and I topped off by giving the talk we have prepared for THOTCON! It went well but it is clear we need a little practice before the big event.

Here are some pictures from the meeting thanx to cmoney. Congrats to Klaiviel for getting so many achievements for the Lock Master badge in one night and to The Professor for winning the dc414 free junk giveaway!! He got a awesome CD/DVD/DVD-R external drive “lol”, enjoy!

Big winner of free dc414 junk 🙂
